Democrat, Trailer Park and Beef Fajita |
Torchy's Tacos is an institute in Austin. They started out in a trailer and now have seven store fronts as well. They focus on a menu full of as much humor as good food. They are also renowned for testing out new tacos and listening to their customers. We tried out three different tacos.
The Democrat has shredded beef barbacoa, avacado, queso fresco, cilantro, onions and a wedge of lime with tomatillo sauce. I could have done without the onions, but I realize that is my personal (dis)taste for fresh onions. The Trailer Park was everybody's favorite. This classy taco is made of fried chicken, green chilies and pico de gallo and a poblano sauce. We got it extra trashy (substitute queso for lettuce). Of course the kids liked a taco with "chicken nuggets". The third taco was a beef fajita one. It was made with skirt steak with grilled onions and peppers, shredded cheese and pico de gallo. The meat tasted good and was marinated. It was still juicy and not dried out like many thinly cut pieces of steak.
We chose to visit the original location at the trailer park. This was a fun experience as we all got to sit at big red picnic benches and have a few drinks as we were eating. This is a wonderful way to eat with kids. In an environment like this, they are able to get up and move around and they don't disrupt others around them. For anybody with young kids, you understand the stressor that it can be if kids won't stay in their seats. Here, you don't have to keep telling them to sit down or to talk quieter or to stop standing on their seat and looking at the people in the booth next to you.
It also helped that everybody liked the food. We stayed for more than an hour, enjoying the food and the chance to take is slowly and enjoy each other's company. This is the perfect combination of food and family. This was not the first time that I was at Torchy's and it won't be the last.
